ART COLLECTION AT THE PHOENICIAN

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” -Thomas Merton

From the sparkling swimming pools to the breathtaking views of the Valley, it is no secret that The Phoenician is a secluded haven of relaxation for every guest that visits the 250-acre property. Signature amenities combined with unrivaled guest service are major factors that contribute to the serene atmosphere found at the AAA Five Diamond resort, however there is one more aspect that brings a uniquely beautiful aura to The Phoenician.

A multi-million dollar art collection adorns the resort, with exquisite pieces found throughout the expansive grounds, guestrooms and public spaces. Unique and enriching, these works highlight different cultures and styles, bringing an illuminating component to the iconic property.

ALLAN HOUSER

One of the most historic components of The Phoenician art collection is the selection of Allan Houser (Haozous) statues found throughout the resort. Houser was a Native American artist who specialized in sculptures and paintings during the 20th century, and was awarded the National Medal of Arts from President Bush in 1992. Highlighting a glimpse of the previous Phoenician design, these statues are pieces of the original art collection at the resort, established when the property opened in 1988. This selection of sculptures is the largest compilation of significant-sized statues in the world, and contribute to the indigenous ambience at The Phoenician by showcasing the history and native culture of the Southwest.

ICONIC ART AT THE PHOENICIAN

During the initial construction and design of The Phoenician, Charles Keating dreamed of creating a word-class destination resort amid the desert landscape. Within the interior design and art selection, developers blended the rich and comfortable ambiance of European elements with the colors and intriguing style of the Southwest to establish the perfect weave of both cultures. With a legacy of luxury since opening in 1988, The Phoenician obtained many timeless pieces of art over the years. After the transformation in 2017, a few treasured works still remain on property, reminding guests of the past, while also complementing the new, contemporary style.

Uncover these iconic pieces at The Phoenician:

  • Cavallo, created by Ferruccio Ferrazzi
    • Artwork location: Above escalators leading to parking garage

*Many priceless works of art were lost or destroyed during World War II. Yet, like the mythical Phoenix, other treasures rose from the ashes. Such is the story of this evocative painting, Cavallo. Restored by the Mosaic School of Art at Vatican City, from which it was purchased, the piece exhibits religious overtones representative of its Italian creator. The most costly art in the resort’s collection at the time of acquisition, it is one of many works indicative of the rich European influences found throughout The Phoenician.

  • Chief Joseph, created by Doug Hyde
    • Artwork location: The Canyon Suites porte cochère
    • Description: Bronze
  • Cesta Lunar #22, created by Olga de Amaral
    • Artwork location: Top of escalators
    • Description: Fiber, Gold Leaf, Paint
  • Large Snail Fossils, Central Mexico, 70 million years old
    • Artwork location: Displayed in niche overlooking escalators
  • Sonoran Display, created by David Kessler
    • Artwork location: Outside elevators by Mowry & Cotton
    • Description: Acrylic on canvas
