Ferriccio Ferrazzi painting by Cavello
Believed, but not confirmed, this painting is actually from a cathedral in Florence. During World War II, the cathedral and the painting suffered damage and was sent to the Mosaic School of Art at the Vatican to be restored.
The cathedral was never fully repaired, so the painting was without a home. The Phoenician purchased the painting from the School of Art through various means for $75,000, the most costly work acquired by the resort at the time.
Huertas Aguiar’s work holds an important place within the art community of South America and can be found in the collections of museums in several countries. He has also painted murals for business and government buildings in countries such as Brazil, Uruguay, and his native Argentina.
Kenji Yoshida
As a soldier in World War 2, Yoshida was extremely fortunate to have survived his teens. The memory of his traumatic war experiences have played a major role in his work ever since. Celebrating the life-affirming forces he saw nearly extinguished, Yoshida captures the delicate balance of time and space - the Yin and Yang of existence - within this nine-piece collection. His intense designs of oil on canvas combine traditional Japanese gold and silver leaf appliqué techniques with his boldly original sense of color. In 1993, he became the first living artist ever to be given a solo exhibition at the Japanese Galleries of the British Museum.
Large Snail Fossils from Central Mexico
Part of the earth’s geological record of prehistoric life, these large snail fossils are from the Cretaceous Period of the Mesozoic Era, dating back 70 million years. It was during this time that the ancestors of many of today’s living gastropods evolved. Invertebrates, including the snail, flourished during this, the Age of Reptiles. This era was also characterized by a warmer climate, mild seasons, and higher sea levels.
French Aubusson Tapestries
French interiors of the 18th century were renowned for their use of decorative tapestries, in the form of wall hangings. Created by an Aubusson factory in the south of France, these tapestries were woven with a blue galloon border, indicating a royal order. Pastoral scenes and landscapes were the most popular subject matter with designers and weavers of the Aubusson workshops.
Sculptures by Allan Houser
Born in Apache, Oklahoma, Houser studied at the United States Indian School in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Here, he gained recognition for his paintings of traditional Native American life. However, it was while working as a pipe fitter’s assistant during World War 2 that he became fascinated by the possibilities of sculpture. In his later years, he worked primarily in marble, limestone and bronze. The fluid lines and graceful dignity of his figures reflect an unmistakable quality that captures the ideals of the people he portrayed. The Phoenician is proud to display over eleven sculptures located throughout the resort. This is one of the largest collections in the Southwest.
